REVIEW: Wren V5AP Sound System

Wren V5AP Sound System

WREN just announced their latest V5AP ($399) Wireless Sound System.  The V5AP has an elegant, bamboo or rosewood construction and design with great connection options, and has dampening features, which allow it to play at high volumes without vibration.  The base is constructed of a silicone pad, and the whole unit is powered by a Class-D, 50-Watt amp that can really fill a room with superior quality sound.

Set-up is a snap, and with the included 30-pin to USB connector cable, you can connect it to any Apple mobile device. Alternatively, you can set the V5 source input to Wi-Fi, and share your Wi-Fi information with the device. Better yet, download the iOS player app and selected the V5AP in the AirPlay menu, and you can start jamming to your favorites.

The V5AP was designed with flexibility in mind.  You can run AUX line-in from any existing component.  With the included remote, you can control all of the V5’s function.  Of course there resides the same controls on the front right edge of the device itself.  When you dock your iDevice, you need to change the input source to USB in order to play or control the iOS device from the remote.   Other ports available on the device include a 3.5mm AUX and power-input.

As mentioned above, the V5AP is a very good looking component….anyone would be proud to display it on a mantel, bookshelf or placed on the hardwoods. Sound quality is second to none.  I might even be so bold as to say it might outclass the Sonos equivalent.  The V5AP retails for $399, and includes user guides, power supply, cables, and a separate remote control.  Wren says it expects to announce an Android compatible Play-Fi version, and possibly a Bluetooth model in Q4.

Wren Sound Systems redefines wireless audio performance, design with V5AP

Phoenixville, Pa., Jan. 31, 2013 – Wren Sound Systems is pleased to announce the official launch of the Wren V5AP, a wireless audio system designed for use with AirPlay®.

Designed by a team of engineers and industry veterans led by former Harman International Senior VP Mike Giffin, the Wren V5AP combines cutting-edge technology, old school materials and

Beautiful on the Outside, Beautiful on the Inside
The Wren V5 is constructed of natural bamboo or rosewood veneers over half-inch thick MDF board. The cabinet is internally braced to provide a chassis free from resonance and coloration. A reinforced, acoustically transparent grille frame provides stiffness without diffraction, and a 4mm low durometer silicone pad covers the base, eliminating surface coupling buzz and sound coloration.

Powered by Intersil’s D2 50 watt DSP-controlled class D amplifier, the Wren V5AP makes beautiful music using two 3-inch long throw drivers with four-layer voice coils for deeper bass and superior power handling. High frequencies are rendered silky and natural by a pair of edge-driven, wide dispersion 19mm soft dome tweeters optimally positioned on the front baffle to create a wide, realistic soundstage that floats high and free above the box.

The Convenience of AirPlay
The Wren V5AP allows users to stream music wirelessly from AirPlay-enabled devices, including iTunes® for PC
and Mac (10.1 or later), iPad®, iPhone® (3G and later) and iPod Touch® (second generation and later). The Wren V5AP can serve as a wireless sound output option for OS X Mountain Lion®, allowing users to experience big sound from movies, music, games and more.

The included 30-pin USB dock connector extends Wren’s compatibility to the first generation iPod Touch, iPod Nano® and the original iPhone.

step-by-step instructions. Once initial setup is complete, controlling the Wren V5AP with an iDevice or computer is simple; most audio functions can also be controlled using simple onboard buttons or the included wireless remote.
