High-Tech Device Protects Homes and Personal Belongings by Sensing
Aug. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- A new high-tech device
automatically shuts off a home's water supply instantly upon detection of a
plumbing leak while alerting family members to the problem -- thus saving
the high cost of water damage to the residence and its contents.
The FloodStopper System provides 24x7 protection against flooding due to internal plumbing failures and accidental overflows. Easily installed by do-it-yourselfers as well as plumbers and contractors, it can be used in any type of dwelling. See http://www.smartsensortechnologies.com. "Beyond the financial losses, flooding can mean the loss of personal and work time, the destruction of family records and personal belongings, a decrease in property resale value and could even result in being displaced," said Marc Cramer, chief operating officer, SmartSensor Technologies, Inc. When a sensor detects moisture from a water leak, the FloodStopper System instantly, and automatically, shuts off the water supply. The System emits a visual and/or an audible alarm to alert family members to the shut-off and displays the location of the problem. As an option, it can also contact a monitored security alarm service. A similar system is being developed to monitor a home's natural gas supply. "Water damage due to broken or frozen water pipes totals well into the hundreds of millions of dollars and ranks second only to hurricanes when it comes to the total number of homes affected and cost of insurance claims," Cramer said. "One estimate puts the average water-leak insurance claim between $30,000 and $40,000 -- and up to $90,000 to $100,000." FloodStopper sensors are placed on the floor throughout the home wherever leaks may occur -- such as under water heaters, bathrooms, sinks, washing machines, and furnaces -- and are either wired or wirelessly connected to the System's control panel.
