REVIEW: Kohler Moxie Brings ‘Spray ‘n’ Play’ Simplicity, Noteworthy Tunes to the Home Office Thinking Place (video)
As a home-based entrepreneur, there’s no telling where my next Eureka! will come from. But it’s often teased out by music. Thus, in our home and home office, we have music playing throughout. We have an MTower in the home office, and a Geneva Model M MP3 player in the kitchen (alas, no Sonos – yet).
With all this music, though, one place was lacking tunes: the bathroom. Now, a new product on the market serves to highlight how the right infusion of music – when done well and deliberately – can change the audio dynamics and very character of a space.
The Kohler Moxie wireless shower speaker ($149) is a well-designed and -executed product that goes way beyond the suction-cup-affixed shower speaker that someone dropped $10 on for a secret Santa giveaway. This is a very cool innovation – one that brings new meaning to the phrase, “streaming audio.” It’s a product that’s proven itself worthy – especially among the high-school set. More on that in a bit…
Moxie is a combo showerhead and built-in Bluetooth wireless speaker system. Silly-simple to install and ready to blast tunes in about 30 seconds, it can change one’s thoughts about the simple act of showering.
Once the showerhead is screwed in (pipe dope not included), pop out the cone-shaped speaker unit from the center of the head (both can operate independently and separately from the other). Charge up the speaker’s lithium ion battery via USB (one charge lasts about seven hours, the spec sheet says.
Ready to play? Turn on Bluetooth transmission on your smartphone, tablet or MP3 player (or wherever your music resides, as long as it has Bluetooth). In a matter of seconds, the two have paired – from up to 30 feet away.
Adjust the volume on your player (save that one Bluetooth button, the speaker has no controls), pop the speaker back into the shower head – and you’re off to the shower.
No weak stream here. The showerhead is manufactured by Kohler, after all, so you get up to 2.5 gallons per minute of flow through 60 nozzles – all in a streamlined design. Props to Kohler: the spray earned the Wife’s Seal of Approval
As for approval from the other younger set… When our high-school daughter learned about the Moxie, she immediately commandeered our bathroom. We lost her for 45 minutes – as our water heater and South Florida’s water table alike struggled to keep pace.
Then, I noticed she’d gone so far as to move into our shower her shampoo, conditioner and body wash. She warned we’d better buy more Moxies – or she and her two siblings all may well be commandeering our shower – and our Moxie.
The Kohler Moxie has earned everyone’s nod. With such broad acceptance, though, it’s these shower-displaced parents who may be singing the blues.
