It didn’t take long before I was able to test just how weatherproof the unit was. Torrential rainfall and tornado warnings in Tennessee proved that the RS630 can stand up to anything short of a tree falling on it. Even after days of being rained on it performed without a hitch. We love that Robomow thought this functionality through. Robomow Zone/Perimeter

There is a definite learning curve setting up the Robomow for the first time, and this is something that has to be done right. Once you place the base station it’s time to set it’s boundaries. The RS630 comes with bright green perimeter wire that carries a current, this is how the Robomow knows where to mow. I was concerned with the appearance of a florescent wire bordering my yard, but after two weeks it was hidden and hardly visible.

robomowusa_zones       The Robomow RS630 comes with an assortment of “zone options”. Each zone is essentially a plot of land that you can individually program the RS630 to mow. For example, if your yard is split by a line of trees you can specify two separate zones and program the size of each. For our tests we set the entire acre lot to a single zone since the entire plot was connected. It’s still an incredibly useful feature if your yard setup requires it.

Adjustable Cutting Height

One of the best features is the adjustable cutting height, easily accessed by turning a knob anywhere from 20 to 80 (0.8 – 3.2 inch). This is particularly handy if you know about proper lawn care. The idea behind cutting height is to cut the top 1/3 and let the fallen clippings protect roots from direct sunlight. This is a proven method for having the best lawn possible that most of us simply don’t have the time to adhere to.

Unique Edge Mode

When you boot up the unit there are three main options displayed. The first tells the Robomow to travel your perimeter line, making sure it covers the entire edge of the lawn then moving on to the regular mowing cycle. The second option starts the regular mowing cycle, bypassing the initial edging. The third option is a home icon, that tells the Robomow to plug itself back into it’s base station if it’s out during a job. The set up controls are designed with simplicity in mind, so it’s incredibly easy to operate regardless of how tech-savvy you are.

Cutting Quality

The RS630 is designed to cut better than your current mower. It’s clear that Robomow put a lot of experience, time, and effort into the design. Sporting dual steel blades, the RS630 will cut through anything small enough to make it under the safety guard. It’s strong enough to chop sticks in it’s path without damaging the blades so you won’t have to worry about replacing them due to an unexpected storm felling trees.

Floating Deck – Handle Any Terrain Without Issue

The floating deck design is simply brilliant. This allows the RS630 to conform to bumps and crevices without giving an uneven cut. Our test yard had a recent gopher infestation, the floating deck had no issue gliding over the ups and downs while giving an even cut. The deck’s biggest advantage is the fact that you don’t have to worry about nicking the blades on protrusions like stumps and large sticks.

Quiet And Peaceful

One of the greatest benefits you’ll find about the Robomow is how quiet it is in comparison to a more traditional option. If the unit was more than 15 feet away it was hardly audible. Advanced Calculation To Determine Efficiency

“Robomow calculates the hours it needs to mow based on the area and the load on the mowing motors.” 

It’s truly impressive how well it worked in the real-world tests. Simply program your approximate square footage and the unit knows how long it should mow. Our test lawn maxed the Robomow range (just under 1 acre), and time after time it covered every inch of the yard without error.

Estimated Life

The Robomow RS630 is designed to give you long-term value. The 26V Lithium battery lasts years before it’s charges diminish. It’s important to note that the unit continues to work well after this threshold is reached, it may simply have to recharge itself before finishing the job.

“The RS series has a high quality commercial Lithium Bromide battery, with an expected life time of more than 5000 charges before it shows any drop in performance. It converts to 4-5 years of use before seeing shorter run time and even then the mower will just go in and out of the base station more often.”

Blade replacement is recommended annually, although that’s pretty standard for lawn mowers and my guess is you could go much longer than that. Excluding the battery and blades, the Robomow is designed for years of use with little to no maintenance.

More Safety Features Than You Could Imagine

“Safety was a huge part of the development of the RS series. In Europe they have very strict safety standards, and they are changing to be even more strict in 2015. That is why the RS series was developed, the old RL wouldn’t meet the new safety standards. We used our years of experience to meet these high safety demands and make an overall better product..”

Robomow has put an incredible amount of time and energy into the safety of their latest product. A few key features attribute to the safety, it’s speed and bumper sensing. The RS630 moves at a slow pace, I would guess around 2-3 mph and even slower when in remote control mode. The front and side bumpers depress on contact and immediately shut down the dual spinning blades. When it contacts a leg, tree, or pet it shuts the blades down and turns around to continue it’s job.  Each unit also comes standard with child lock and anti-theft protection for the extra peace of mind. We tested the safety countless times until I was satisfied enough to put our seal of approval on it. I can say with absolute certainty that Robomow’s products are 100% safe. I bet my foot on it (literally).


Why Is It Such A Great Value?

Time is money, and that’s exactly what makes the Robomow such a great value. Below I’ve run a chart on how much money the Robomow would actually save someone in well under the course of it’s lifetime. The example below uses conservative estimates such as a $10 hourly pay rate, mowing the lawn once every week, and mowing time for each session lasting an hour. The chart is obviously a bit simple, but I encourage you to make your own!

There are a few small limitations that Robomow is very open about. The first being the unit can’t handle more than a 36% grade. Only once did I come across this, and it was done for testing purposes. I set the unit to mow a steep ditch expecting it to topple over itself and was pleasantly surprised when it realized the grade was too steep, turned around and continued on it’s way. The maximum lawn size is 32,300 ft², which is just under an acre. My advice if you own more than an acre, buy two units… it will be money well spent.


Final Thoughts

After two months with the Robomow I’m absolutely sold. It brings such a unique mixture of offerings to the table, but most importantly it’s absolutely within reach for the average homeowner. The amount of time it will save the average consumer over the next few years makes the Robomow RS630 not only an awesome gadget, but a sound investment.     I have owned 2 of these in years past (not the RS series however), and based on the positive experience I have had with those, I cant wait to win this RS630! they cut great, they mulch, they edge, I mean wow! and I don’t have to be out there with it? that has always been my attraction to this mower! but its rather difficult to convince others just how time saving these things are!

    Hi, I live in the Netherlands. We actually own the RS630 since May 2014. Works like a charm and its fun to watch it work. Quality is perfect and it saves a lot of time. However it failed suddenly this April 2015 and we had to contact Robomow for repair. What a hassle! First they take 5 days to acknowledge that you create an online problem ticket. Then they let you wait 2 weeks to assign a repair facility! And then it takes an additional week to get it repaired. Meanwhile the lawn keeps kept on growing of course. Service of Robomow is not efficient at all. A bit of a paradox given that they sell futuristic machines but internally they operate hugely inefficient. No clue why they have all these steps.

    RoboMow is a good robot, but their service is terrible in the US, too. It’s a similar procedure to take care of a repair. On the other hand, LawnBott has a tremendous customer service track record and a dealer network across the US. Here is the web site: Robomow is great – when it works. But it’s a machine and machines can have issues at times. When grass is growing, a great robot and the best service is what you need.

    A link to an interactive calculator would be useful. Frequency of mowing varies with seasons and with geographic location.

    If you cann’t keep straight the difference between “its” and “it’s” here is my suggestion: always fully spell instances of “it is”, whereupon any remaining instance of “it’s” is an error.

    This does appear to offer the greatest number of features in its price range. However, there are still grave disadvantages in current robotic mowers. First, almost all of them require a perimeter wire. (There is only one that does not. This unit uses grass sensors and will change direction if it does not sense grass, or if it detects that the wheels are not turning at the same speed due to resistance from an object. It is designed only for use in small spaces) This wire must have an electrical current at all times in order for the robot to detect the defined boundary. Second, almost all robotic mowers will mow along the perimeter, then mow the rest of the yard in a random pattern. Thus, they might mow the same area twice while entirely missing another area. ( Once again, I am aware of only one model that will mow in parallel rows, remembering where it has been so that it will not miss an area or mow the same spot twice. This model is also designed for use in smaller areas-and also requires a wire boundary marker wire). Currently, two companies are attempting to develop systems that will mow in a logical pattern without use of a perimeter wire. The first would use low power radio beacons placed in four separate areas of the property. The mower would use triangulation to determine it’s location. This system would permit the user to define the boundry by driving the mower under remote control along the boundry of the yard. The mower would build a map of the boundry. The second and more impressive development project would use stereoscopic television cameras mounted on the mower. The mower would develop a three dimensional map of the property. The user would – as is the case for the prior example-define the boundary by driving the mower under remote control.

    In conclusion, I would tolerate use of a boundary wire technology, but only if the mower would use a logical, row by row mowing pattern to ensure full coverage while minimizing mowing time . I would also insist that the mower be capable of handling three quarters of an acre- the size of many American lawns. While tempting, the Robomow 630 can handle a large yard but mows in a random pattern.

      Great perspective Robert. Even though it’s only been a year and half since we published this review, a lot has changed in the robotics industry.

      I completely agree – Refining the mowing pattern would be a major breakthrough with the development of future units. Efficiency would be nice, but the real benefit would be the guarantee of 100% yard coverage. Robomow did an excellent job of this in almost every test we ran, but every yard is different and there’s always room for improvement.

      There are several ways that “line mowing” can be achieved. For ideas, have a good look at supermarket trolleys. Rotary blade mowers can crab sideways (either driven or spin).

      Electric motors perhaps lack sufficient power, how about a combination using petrol as the prime mover?
